U.S. Two Cent Coin

The U.S. Two-Cent coin was introduced in 1864, during the height of the Civil War, as the country faced both a shortage of small change and a crisis of confidence in the economy. Struck in bronze rather than the usual silver, it was one of the first coins intended to circulate widely at a time when precious-metal coinage had largely vanished from everyday use. The obverse features a large shield symbolizing strength and unity, flanked by laurel branches, while the reverse displays a simple wreath encircling the denomination “2 CENTS.” Above the shield appears the motto In God We Trust—the first time those words ever appeared on a U.S. coin, setting a precedent that would soon spread across other denominations.

Though practical in theory, the coin never caught on with the public. Its unusual denomination and size made it inconvenient, and after the Civil War, when silver and nickel coins returned to circulation, demand quickly faded. By 1872 the Mint ceased production entirely. Yet today, the Two-Cent piece stands as a fascinating artifact of a turbulent era—born of wartime necessity and remembered for introducing a phrase that would become central to American currency.
