History of the Artifact

Under Emperor Domitian, who ruled from 81 to 96 AD, the silver denarius saw extensive mintage, reflecting both the emperor's need to consolidate his power and his desire to leave a lasting legacy through monumental public works and military campaigns. Domitian was a meticulous and authoritarian ruler, and his coinage policies mirrored his drive to solidify the Roman Empire’s image and stability. The denarius, being the primary silver coin used in everyday transactions, was an important part of his regime's communication strategy. His coins frequently depicted Domitian himself, the goddess Minerva, and other symbols emphasizing his strength and piety.

Throughout his reign, Domitian altered the purity and weight of the denarius. Early in his rule, Domitian increased the silver content of the denarius to approximately 98%, a level it hadn’t reached since the reign of Nero. This restoration of the coin's silver quality was part of a broader economic policy aimed at stabilizing the currency and gaining the public’s favor. However, as his reign progressed and demands on the treasury increased due to military campaigns, building projects, and his lavish lifestyle, Domitian was forced to slightly reduce the silver content to around 93%, still relatively high by the standards of the time.
