History of the Artifact

The bronze prutah coins minted in Judea during the governorship of Pontius Pilate, who ruled from 26 to 36 CE, are among the most historically significant coins of the period, given Pilate’s role in the crucifixion of Jesus. These coins continued the tradition of Roman provincial coinage in Judea, balancing Roman authority with sensitivity to Jewish religious restrictions.

The inscriptions on Pilate’s coins were in Greek, the common administrative language of the region. Many of them bore the inscription TIBERIOY KAISAROS, meaning “of Tiberius Caesar,” reinforcing the authority of the emperor. Some also included the phrase IOYLIA KAISAROS, referring to Julia, the deified mother of Tiberius, an unusual inclusion in Judean coinage and another example of Pilate’s willingness to introduce Roman religious elements into local currency. His coins were typically dated using the regnal years of Tiberius, with inscriptions such as LIZ (Year 17, or 30 CE) and LIH (Year 18, or 31 CE), marking specific years of issue.

These prutot were small and of low value, widely circulated among the local population for daily transactions. They continued to be used even after Pilate’s removal from office in 36 CE and remained in circulation throughout the first century. Many examples have been found in archaeological excavations across Judea, including in Jerusalem, reinforcing their widespread use.
