History of the Artifact
Minted over 2,000 years ago, these Celtic silver coins likely circulated during the tumultuous Gallic Wars—a campaign led by Julius Caesar, against the nomadic tribes inhabiting Gaul.
The Celts, comprising various Indo-European tribes, once held sway across Western Europe from the British Isles to the Danube River. Roman expansionism eventually led to the conquest of Gaul. The inhabiting Celts eventually assimilated into the Roman Empire. Gaul was officially declared a Roman province in 27 BC.
Reflecting the influence of Roman coinage, these coins bear the customary imagery of the era. The obverse depicts the helmeted visage of Roma, symbolizing the might of Rome, while the reverse features the image of a horse—a motif commonly associated with Celtic artistry.
