History of the Artifact

The Colonial Quarter Anna coin minted in India under George V was an important low-denomination currency used during British rule. These coins were issued between 1912 and 1936, during George V’s reign as Emperor of India. Made primarily of bronze, the coin was a practical means of small transactions in colonial India. It had a weight of approximately 4.85 grams and a diameter of around 25.4 mm, making it a lightweight yet durable piece for everyday use.

The obverse of the coin prominently featured a left-facing portrait of King George V, accompanied by the inscription "GEORGE V KING AND EMPEROR OF INDIA" around the edge. This portrait changed slightly over the years as refinements were made to its detailing. The reverse side of the coin displayed the denomination "1/4 ANNA", along with the word "INDIA" and the year of minting. The design enclosed within decorative a circular border or floral wreaths, making it visually distinctive.

These coins were minted in several locations across British India, including Bombay, Calcutta, and Madras Mints. Each mint had minor distinguishing features, such as mint marks or slight variations in design. The Bombay Mint used a small dot (•) as a mint mark, while the Calcutta Mint typically had no mark. The Madras Mint, though much less common for this series, sometimes used an "M" mark. Certain years and mint variations are particularly sought after by collectors due to their rarity or errors in production.
