History of the Artifact

These original presidential campaign artifacts take us back to the 1952 Presidential Campaign which saw Eisenhower run against Democrat opponent Adlai Stevenson. Eisenhower greatly benefitted from his immense popularity retained from the war, serving as the Supreme Allied Commander on the Western Front overseeing Operation Overlord (D-Day), among others granting him a relatively easy victory over Stevenson. He ran in 1952 with his famous slogan which we see emblemed on the pins, “I Like Ike” - a short but catchy slogan that played no minor role in helping him snatch the presidency from his Democratic contender.

Eisenhower would go on to serve two consecutive terms extending his presidency until 1961. Throughout his 8 year tenure, he had to oversee delicate international crises including the stalemate in the Korean war, rising tensions in the Cold War with the U.S.S.R as well as domestic issues such as increasing social unrest related to Civil Rights activism.
