History of the Artifact

The 2 Lira coin minted in Italy between 1923 and 1935 is a significant artifact from the era of the Kingdom of Italy under King Victor Emmanuel III and Benito Mussolini's Fascist regime. This coin captures the political and cultural context of the early 20th century, reflecting both the monarchy and the growing influence of Fascism during Mussolini's rise to power.

On the obverse of the coin is the profile portrait of King Victor Emmanuel III, who reigned from 1900 to 1946. Around the portrait is the inscription “VITTORIO EMANUELE III RE D’ITALIA,” which translates to "Victor Emmanuel III, King of Italy." This side of the coin symbolizes the continuity of the monarchy, even as Fascist ideology increasingly permeated the government and society.

The reverse side of the coin features the fasces, a bundle of rods bound together with an axe protruding, an ancient Roman symbol that Mussolini adopted to represent the unity and authority of the Fascist state. The denomination “2 LIRE” is inscribed alongside the fasces, along with the year of mintage. This imagery was deliberately chosen to reinforce Fascist ideals, emphasizing strength through unity and the dominance of the state over the individual. The use of the fasces as a central element reflects how Mussolini’s regime sought to link itself to the grandeur of ancient Rome.

The coin was initially minted in nickel, but as Italy’s economy evolved, the material changed to stainless steel for the 1935 issues. Measuring approximately 29 millimeters in diameter and weighing about 10 grams, the coin was a durable and practical piece of currency. It circulated during a time when Italy was recovering from the aftermath of World War I, and Mussolini was implementing policies to stabilize the economy and assert his power.

Today, these coins are of considerable interest to both collectors and historians. Their value depends on factors like condition, rarity, and the year of issue, with some mint years being scarcer than others. Beyond their monetary worth, these coins offer a tangible connection to a pivotal period in Italian history, encapsulating the interplay of monarchy, Fascism, and economic change during a complex era.
