History of the Artifact

Julia Maesa was born in Emesa (modern-day Homs, Syria) around 165 AD into a powerful and influential priestly family connected to the cult of the sun god Elagabal. She was the sister-in-law of Emperor Septimius Severus and the grandmother of two Roman emperors, Elagabalus and Severus Alexander. Following the assassination of her grandson Caracalla and the brief reign of the usurper Macrinus, Julia Maesa played a decisive role in restoring her family’s influence over the empire.

Through political cunning and strategic use of her immense wealth, Maesa orchestrated the rise of her teenage grandson Elagabalus to the throne in 218 AD, claiming he was the illegitimate son of Caracalla. After Elagabalus proved erratic and unpopular, she maneuvered to have him replaced by her younger grandson, Severus Alexander, thereby preserving the Severan dynasty. Her ability to install and remove emperors earned her a rare degree of political authority for a Roman woman.

Julia Maesa was granted the title Augusta and appeared frequently on imperial coinage, symbolizing her formal power and legitimacy. Her influence during a time of dynastic instability helped maintain a semblance of continuity in the empire, and her legacy remains one of the most formidable examples of female political power in Roman history.
