History of the Artifact

There are few more Iconic ancient Greek coins that a collector can own than this beautiful, mythologically rich coin from 480 BC minted in the ancient city of Parion (present-day town of Kemer in Canakkale province of Turkey). In the Hellenic period, It was a major coastal city and trading port with two harbors.

The face pictured on the coin is the "gorgoneion," a mask in imitation of the head of the gorgon. In archaic and classical Greek art gorgons were always shown facing the viewer, protruding tongue, and teeth.

Greek mythology commonly refers to three sisters who are described as having hair made of living, venomous snakes and horrifying visages that turned those who beheld them to stone. The most famous was Medusa who was decapitated by the hero Perseus.

It isn't clear why Parion chose this hideous monster as an emblem for the city. Perhaps it was chosen as a symbol of terror. It was used on Greek shields to frighten the enemy as well as for its hypnotic ability--something about the gorgoneion attracts the gaze of enemy soldiers toward the shield and thus away from the weapon hand.

Whether you're a history buff, a collector, or simply intrigued by the mythology of Ancient Greece, this Ancient Greek Drachm is a must-have for your collection.
