History of the Artifact

This silver drachm, minted in 480 BC in the ancient city of Parion (modern-day Kemer in Çanakkale Province, Turkey), showcases the iconic "gorgoneion," the mask of a Gorgon. During the Hellenic period, Parion was a significant coastal city and bustling trading hub, strategically located with two harbors that connected it to maritime commerce.

The gorgoneion on the coin is a depiction of the mythical Gorgon, a creature from Greek mythology associated with terror and protection. Gorgons, particularly Medusa, were often portrayed in Greek art as facing forward, with a grimacing expression, protruding tongue, and sharp teeth. These fearsome features served dual purposes: to ward off evil and to hypnotize or intimidate enemies. The emblem was commonly used on shields and armor, leveraging its fearsome gaze to distract opponents during battle.

The choice of this design for Parion's coinage remains a mystery. It may symbolize the city's strength or its role in safeguarding its people and trade. Alternatively, it could reflect the broader cultural significance of the Gorgon as a protective and awe-inspiring figure.
