These Greek bronze coins were minted in the ancient city of Misos along the Black Sea coast of modern-day northern Turkey. Founded by Greek colonists from Miletus in the 6th century B.C, it was re-settled by Athenians and incorporated into the Kingdom of Pontus in the 4th century BC. It eventually fell under Roman rule in 71 B.C.
The obverse of the coin features Medusa, a famous figure from Greek mythology known as one of the Gorgons, a trio of monstrous sisters. She is typically described as a woman with snakes for hair and a gaze that could turn anyone who looked at her into stone. Medusa's face is said to be so hideous that it could petrify those who met her eyes. Medusa is often depicted as a fearsome and grotesque creature, and her ability to turn people to stone made her a symbol of terror in Greek mythology. She met her end when the hero Perseus beheaded her with the help of divine gifts, including a mirrored shield, which allowed him to avoid her gaze. Medusa's severed head remained potent, and it played a role in other mythological events, such as helping to defeat the sea monster Cetus and later being used as a weapon.
On the reverse, the goddess Nike is depicted holding a wreath and a palm branch. Nike is the Greek goddess of victory, often depicted as a winged figure symbolizing triumph and success.
Mithridates VI oversaw the minting of these coins, which have a tetrachalkon (one-twelfth of a drachm) denomination.

Owning a bronze coin minted by the ancient Greeks in Amisos (modern-day Samsun, Turkey) is relatively accessible for collectors due to the city's significance as a regional trade and cultural hub. Amisos, a prominent city on the southern coast of the Black Sea, was founded by Greek colonists in the 6th century BCE. Its strategic location made it an important center for commerce, particularly in grain, fish, and metals, which necessitated the minting of coins for local and regional trade.
Their sturdy bronze composition allowed many to survive through centuries of use, burial, and eventual rediscovery. These coins were often buried in hoards for safekeeping during periods of conflict or instability, a common practice in the ancient world.
Today, bronze coins from Amisos can be found through numismatic dealers, auctions, and online platforms specializing in ancient Greek coinage. Their artistic designs, historical significance, and relative affordability make them a popular choice for collectors.

The button arrived upside down in the display case so I had to open it up and fix it before gifting. Other than that everything was great! Neat gift.

The Coin and case is awesome! The only additional thing that could make it perfect would be a little description of what/who the coin faces represent and possibly where the specific coin was found. Otherwise very content
