History of the Artifact

The bronze coins of the Greek city State of Amisos, featuring Athena on the obverse and Perseus on the reverse are a fascinating numismatic reflection of the Hellenistic cultural and political landscape. These coins were primarily struck during the rule of the Mithradatic kings, minted under Mithradates VI Eupator (120–63 BCE). Mithradates VI, became known for his defiance against Rome in the Mithradatic Wars. The designs of the coins are intentional, employing Greek deities and legendary figures on his coinage (alternative design with Zeus, Ares, Dionysus and others also available in our shop) to solidify his image as both a warrior king and a patron of Hellenism.

On the obverse, the coins depict Athena, the goddess of wisdom and warfare, wearing a Corinthian helmet. This imagery closely resembles the earlier Athenian tetradrachms and other Greek coinage that honoured Athena as a protector of the city and a symbol of military strength.

The reverse features Perseus, the Greek hero famed for slaying the Gorgon Medusa. He is depicted standing, holding Medusa’s severed head in one hand and a curved sword, or harpa, in the other. Some variations show him wearing winged sandals, referencing his divine gifts from Hermes that enabled him to complete his quest. At his feet lays Medusa's slain body. It's also worth noting that, the Gorgoneion (Medusa’s head) was often used in Greek art and coinage as an apotropaic symbol, believed to ward off evil.
