History of the Artifact
This silver triobol was struck around 330 B.C. in the ancient Greek city of Opus in Locris, a region of central Greece known for its devotion to Demeter and its legendary hero Ajax the Locrian. The obverse features the serene head of Demeter facing right, her expression calm and dignified, embodying the goddess of agriculture, fertility, and the earth’s abundance. Her image reflects the importance of rural life and agricultural prosperity to the Locrians, who honored her as a protector of their fields and families. The craftsmanship of the portrait, with its delicate features and classical balance, places the coin in the refined artistic tradition of late Classical Greece.
The reverse depicts Ajax the Locrian, the fierce warrior from Homeric legend, advancing right with his shield and spear ready for battle. An urn lies between his feet, and within the shield appears a serpent — a symbol of protection, divine power, and heroic spirit. This imagery linked the Locrians directly to their mythic ancestor, reminding every citizen and trader who used the coin of their heroic lineage and divine favor. Silver triobols such as this one circulated locally and regionally, embodying both civic pride and the enduring fusion of myth, religion, and artistry that defined Greek coinage in the fourth century B.C.

Ancient Greek silver coins come from hundreds of independent city-states that flourished across the Mediterranean and Near East from the 6th to the 2nd centuries B.C. Each city minted its own distinct coinage, often bearing symbols of its patron gods, heroes, or local myths. The silver used for these coins was typically sourced from rich mining regions such as Laurion in Attica, Mount Pangaion in Thrace, and later from Macedonian and Anatolian deposits under Alexander the Great and his successors. These mines produced vast quantities of high-quality silver that fueled trade, warfare, and artistic innovation throughout the Greek world.
Many of the coins known today come from ancient hoards buried during times of conflict, invasion, or political upheaval. They have been unearthed across Greece, Asia Minor, the Balkans, and the wider Hellenistic world, often found together with gold staters or bronze issues. Because silver is highly durable and resists corrosion, these coins frequently survive in excellent condition even after more than two millennia underground. Modern examples come from reputable dealers, numismatic auctions, and museum collections, each coin serving as a small, enduring artifact of Greek culture — a direct link to the art, mythology, and economy of the ancient world.
