Habsburg Dynasty | Silver Kreuzer

These silver 3 Kreuzer coins feature the monarchs of the Habsburg Dynasty who famously reigned over the Holy Roman Empire, a territory encompassing modern day Germany, Austria and Hungary. 

The obverse of the coins feature Leopold I of Habsburg (1640-1705) facing right. The legend around the bust reads "Leopoldus, Dei Gratia, Romanorum Imperator Semper Augustus, Germaniae, Hungariae Bohemiaeque rex". The reverse features the iconic Habsburg double headed imperial eagle under a crown with a flat top shield (CA) or oval shield with arms of Austria and Burgundy. The date is found above separated by the crown.

Leopold I, who features in the coins, was the Holy Roman Emperor from 1658-1705. Leopold is best remembered for the genetic defect known as mandibular prognathism, a facial deformity in which the lower jaw extends further than the upper piece. Imagery on this 3 Kreuzer coin of Leopold is generally thought to be an exaggeration of the Emperor's actual profile, and also thought to be the source of his nickname, "The Hogmouth."
