History of the Artifact

Faustina the Younger was born around 130 AD, the daughter of Emperor Antoninus Pius and Empress Faustina the Elder. She married her maternal cousin, Marcus Aurelius, who would later become one of Rome’s most respected emperors. As empress, she held the title Augusta and played a prominent role in the imperial court during one of the empire’s most turbulent and philosophically influential periods.

Faustina accompanied Marcus Aurelius on several of his military campaigns, particularly along the Danube frontier, which was highly unusual for a Roman woman of her status. She was celebrated for her dignity, generosity, and the stability she brought to the imperial household. Despite some ancient accusations of infidelity and intrigue, the emperor held her in the highest regard, referring to her as “faithful” and “revered” in his private writings. After her death in 175 AD, Marcus Aurelius had her deified, and numerous statues and coins were issued in her honor, cementing her legacy as one of the most venerated empresses of Rome’s golden age.
