History of the Artifact

Their name, "Wu Zhu" (五铢), refers to their standardized weight, with "zhu" being an ancient Chinese unit of measure. The design of the Wu Zhu coins was both practical and symbolic. They were round with a square hole in the center, a feature that not only facilitated easy stringing for transport but also reflected traditional Chinese cosmological beliefs, with the circle representing heaven and the square symbolizing earth.
