History of the Artifact

Now available to you are original silver Frankish ‘Deniers’ - a medieval silver coin minted throughout the early and middle ages across the various counties and duchies of France. 

These coins were minted a millennium ago (900-1100 A.D) in a time of Kings, Dukes and Counts that ruled modern day France with an Iron fist over vassals and serfs, who pledged to serve their lives as peasant or knights in the service of the crown. These coins were known as “Deniers”, a name borrowed after the famous Roman silver “Denarius” coin (Also on sale in our store). The kings under whom these coins were minted often had their initials inscribed on the obverse and had a prominent cross decorating the obverse. The prominence of the cross is a stark reminder of the Crusades occurring at the time of these coins’ minting; the great military campaigns conducted by nobility from across Europe to conquer the Holy Land away from Islamic rule.
