History of the Artifact

Campo del Cielo is a large meteorite impact site located in Argentina, known for containing some of the heaviest and largest meteorite fragments ever discovered. The impact occurred around 4,000 to 5,000 years ago, when an iron-nickel asteroid, estimated to have weighed about 840 tons, broke up in the atmosphere and showered the area with debris. This scattered meteorite fragments over a large region, covering around 60 square kilometers.

The site is famous for the discovery of numerous iron meteorites, including one of the largest, weighing over 30 tons. The human history surrounding these items is just as fascinating as the natural history. In the late 16th century, the Spanish governor of the province commissioned the military to search for the source of iron which the natives used for their weapons. The group found the mass of iron, which the natives claimed fell from the sky. The meteorites were noted as having unusually high metal content. 

Today, Campo del Cielo remains an important site for meteorite research, shedding light on the composition of asteroids and the history of Earth's interactions with extraterrestrial objects.
