This hammered silver penning was produced in the region of Frisia during the eleventh century, a period when local authorities within the Holy Roman Empire exercised significant control over regional minting. Although imperial authority formally rested with Henry III, many coins were struck under the supervision of regional rulers such as Bruno II of Brunswick, who governed the area from 1024 to 1057. These thin hammered coins were produced by striking small silver blanks between engraved dies, a method that often resulted in irregular shapes and slightly off-center designs typical of medieval minting techniques.
