History of the Artifact

The Sasanian Empire, which ruled from 224 to 651 AD, was the last great Iranian empire before the Islamic conquests. It succeeded the Parthian Empire and was founded by Ardashir I after he defeated the last Parthian king, Artabanus IV. The Sasanians established a highly centralized state, with strong ties between the monarchy and the Zoroastrian religion, which became a defining characteristic of their rule. Their capital, Ctesiphon, located near modern-day Baghdad, became one of the most important cities of the ancient world. The empire was known for its military prowess, architectural achievements, and cultural influence, which extended across Central Asia, India, and even into China through trade along the Silk Road.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the Sasanian economy was its coinage, particularly the silver drachm. These coins were struck in large quantities and circulated widely across the empire and beyond, even influencing the monetary systems of later Islamic dynasties. The standard design of the Sasanian drachm featured a portrait of the ruling monarch on the obverse, wearing an elaborate crown unique to each king. This design helped distinguish different rulers and reinforced their authority through coinage. The reverse typically depicted a Zoroastrian fire altar, often flanked by two attendants, symbolizing the state’s close connection to the Zoroastrian faith.

Sasanian silver drachms were of high purity and became a dominant currency in international trade, especially in regions such as Central Asia and the Byzantine Empire. Their longevity in circulation is evident from the fact that even after the fall of the Sasanian Empire in the 7th century, these coins continued to be used and imitated by various Islamic and Central Asian rulers.
