Item Description

100 mm Wingspan
8 Inch Hangable Shadowbox Frame
Male
North America

Antheraea polyphemus, commonly known as the Polyphemus Moth, is a large and impressive silk moth belonging to the Saturniidae family. Native to North America, these moths are widely distributed across the continent, from Canada to Mexico. Named after Polyphemus, a Cyclops in Greek mythology, the species is recognized for its distinctive eye-like markings on its wings, contributing to its unique and recognizable appearance.

The Polyphemus Moth is one of the largest moths in North America, with wingspans ranging from 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 centimeters). The wings exhibit a complex pattern of earthy tones, including shades of brown, tan, and reddish hues. The most notable feature is the large eyespots on its hindwings, resembling the eyes of the mythical Cyclops. These eyespots are thought to serve a defensive purpose, potentially deterring predators by mimicking the appearance of a larger creature.
