History of the Artifact

These Southern Rhodesian coins were minted in Britain for use in the Empire’s colony of Rhodesia during the reign of George VI, father of the late Queen Elizabeth II. The obverse features the portrait of Portrait of George VI, King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions from 1936 to 1952. The reverse features three spears splitting date, the denomination of 3 Pence at the top, and ‘Southern Rhodesia’ around the edges of the reverse.

Southern Rhodesia was a self-governing British colony in Southern Africa, now known as Zimbabwe. It was characterized by a white minority rule and a racially segregated society during its existence from 1923 to 1980. The colony's government unilaterally declared independence in 1965 under Prime Minister Ian Smith, leading to international isolation and conflict. In 1980, Southern Rhodesia became independent as the Republic of Zimbabwe, ending white minority rule and racial segregation.

The name "Rhodesia" was chosen in honor of Cecil Rhodes, who had a vision of establishing a British-controlled corridor of territory in Africa from the Cape to Cairo. He was a prominent figure in the expansion of the British Empire in southern Africa, and the territory bore his name as a tribute to his influence and efforts in the region.
