History of the Artifact

The Roman Follis was a bronze coin introduced during the late Roman Empire, around the late 3rd and early 4th centuries AD. Its name, derived from the Latin word for "bag," alludes to the large quantities often needed for transactions due to its low face value. The Follis became a cornerstone of the monetary system during this period, widely circulated among both common citizens and soldiers.

Typically, the obverse of the Follis features a portrait of the reigning emperor such as Diocletian, or Constantine among others. The reverse often displays various motifs, including deities, military themes, or allegorical figures, accompanied by inscriptions promoting Roman virtues such as "Felicitas" (prosperity) or "Concordia" (harmony).

Initially struck with a silver wash, which gave the coin a more prestigious appearance, the Follis gradually lost this feature as the empire faced economic challenges. Despite this, its robust bronze composition allowed many examples to survive in good condition, offering modern collectors a tangible connection to the daily life and governance of ancient Rome.
