History of the Artifact

The Tetradrachm was the largest coin denomination circulating in the Eastern Provinces of the Roman Empire. Unlike the denarii minted in Rome, which bore Latin inscriptions, Syrian tetradrachms featured Greek inscriptions, reflecting the strong Hellenistic influence in the region. Both the continued usage of Greek monetary denominations, as well as Greek inscriptions, demonstrates the preservation of regional cultures despite full control by Roman authorities.

Symbols of Roman authority are abundant on the motifs decorating the coin. On the obverse the coins feature the bust of the reigning emperor, often adorned with a laurel wreath, a radiate crown, or military armor. The reverse features the Roman Imperial eagle (Aquila), a quintessential Roman symbol, often carried into battle as a sacred standard by Roman Legions. The Aquila has famously inspired numerous national emblems, including the double-headed eagle of the Byzantine and Holy Roman Empires, the Napoleonic Eagle as well as the national eagles of Germany, Russia, and the United States, all of which evoke Rome’s rendition, featured in these Tetradrachms.

Economically, Syrian tetradrachms were vital for maintaining stability in the eastern provinces. Given the strategic importance of Syria as a buffer zone between Rome and the Parthian Empire, ensuring a stable and functional monetary system was crucial.
