Minted on the Greek island of Euboea, in the city of Histiaia, between 370-140 BC, the coins feature the elegant head of the Nymph ‘Histiaia’ from which the city got its name. The same Nymph Histiaia is also featured on the reverse sat on the prow of an ancient Greek Galley.
A Nymph is a minor female nature deity typically associated with a particular location or landform. Different from goddesses, nymphs are generally regarded as divine spirits who animate nature, and are usually depicted as beautiful, young nubile maidens who love to dance and sing.
This coin is called a ‘Tetrobol’ signifying ‘4 Obols’. In Classical Greece, six Obols made up the drachma (a larger silver Greek coin, similar to the Roman Denarius). With one Obol, an ancient Greek could purchase a “Kantharos” of Wine (Cup of Wine), approximately 3 L or 100 US fl oz of Wine. Three obols were standard rate for prostitutes.

Owning Greek silver coins is relatively common and highly sought after by collectors due to their historical significance, artistic beauty, and the widespread influence of ancient Greek civilization.
Greek silver coins were typically struck from high-quality silver, often sourced from mines like those in Laurium near Athens. Their durability allowed many to survive in excellent condition. These coins are celebrated for their intricate designs, featuring depictions of gods, heroes, animals, and symbols that reflect the identity and pride of the issuing city-state.
Many of these coins were preserved in hoards, buried during periods of war, political instability, or economic uncertainty. Over the centuries, these hoards were rediscovered through archaeological digs or accidental findings. Others remained in circulation or were kept as treasures, eventually becoming part of private collections.
Today, Greek silver coins are widely available through numismatic dealers, auctions, and online platforms. While their rarity and price can vary depending on the type and condition, they are accessible to collectors at all levels.

All perfect packaging and excellent delivery times. It was a real pleasure
The button arrived upside down in the display case so I had to open it up and fix it before gifting. Other than that everything was great! Neat gift.

The Coin and case is awesome! The only additional thing that could make it perfect would be a little description of what/who the coin faces represent and possibly where the specific coin was found. Otherwise very content
