History of the Artifact

The Corinthian stater is one of the most iconic silver coins of the ancient Greek world, widely recognized for its elegant and consistent imagery. First issued in the 5th century BC by the wealthy and powerful city of Corinth, the coin features on its obverse the winged horse Pegasus, a symbol closely associated with the city and its mythological heritage. According to legend, Pegasus sprang from the blood of the slain Medusa and was later tamed by the Corinthian hero Bellerophon. The image of Pegasus, always in mid-flight and often facing left, became a definitive emblem of Corinth and was instantly recognizable in trade.

On the reverse is the helmeted head of Athena, the goddess of wisdom and warfare. She is depicted in profile, wearing a Corinthian-style helmet, often adorned with decorative patterns or animal motifs. This pairing of Pegasus and Athena reinforced Corinth’s cultural identity and its divine associations, particularly emphasizing strength, intelligence, and martial prowess. The Corinthian stater was struck in high purity silver and maintained a consistent weight standard of about 8.6 grams. It became so trusted and widespread in commerce that many other Greek cities, especially in the western Mediterranean, began minting their own versions of the “Corinthian type” stater, often with minor local variations but preserving the essential imagery of Pegasus and Athena.
