Spanish Colonial Coin | 4 Maravedis

These copper coins were minted under King Charles the III and King Charles the IV of Spain. King Charles life was particularly tumultuous. Born in 1748, he reigned from 1788 to 1808. His reign was marked by political instability, the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte's influence in Spain, and ultimately, his abdication in favor of his son, Ferdinand VII, during the tumultuous events of the Spanish War of Independence. These coins circulated alongside their silver counterparts valued at 2, 4 and 8 reales (also available in our store). 

The obverse of the coin shows the effigy of the Spanish monarch, Charles IV with a lettering that reads: ‘CAROLUS·IIII· D·G HISP REX·’. The Reverse depicts a ‘Don Pelayo’ cross with castles and lions set in all angles, all within a larger decorative wreath.
