Description

History of the Artifact

These iconic coins, that were traded across the colonies of the new world, aboard Gold and Silver filled Spanish Galleons, were the monies of choice across both colonial South and North America given their fine silver quality. 

The obverse of the coin shows the effigy of the Spanish monarch, King Charles the IV. King Charles was born in 1748 and reigned from 1788 to 1808. His reign was marked by political instability, the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte's influence in Spain, and ultimately, his abdication in favor of his son, Ferdinand VII, during the tumultuous events of the Spanish War of Independence.

The reverse the Spanish coat of arms which features a shield divided into quarters representing the Kingdoms of Castile and León. It is adorned with the Pillars of Hercules on either side and topped with a royal crown. The motto "PLUS ULTRA" is prominently displayed, symbolizing Spain's historical exploration and ambition. Around the coat of arms is the laying phrase “DG HISPAN ET IND REX”, meaning “By the Grace of God, King of Spain and the Indies”, referring to the King.
