History of the Artifact

The Spinosaurus(“Spine Lizard”) is a genus of Spinosaurid dinosaur which inhabited North Africa between the Cenomanian and Late Cretaceous Period. The first complete fossil profile of the Spinosaurus was discovered in 1912 by German Paleontologist Ersnt Stromer. These remains were unfortunately destroyed in World War II during the allied bombing campaign of Dresden.

Recent estimates of the creature suggest it had length of 46 feet (14 meters), and weighed 8.2 tons, making the Spinosaurus one of the largest terrestrial carnivores ever to walk the earth. Most modern researchers support the thesis that the Spinosaurus was a semiaquatic dinosaur which ate both land and aquatic animals. There are a number of physiological features of the Spinosaurus skeleton which supports this thesis, such as high density bones allowing for buoyancy control, and a paddle like tail shape which was used for underwater propulsion.

In fact, its habitat of swamps and tidal plains is one of the main reasons why Spinosaurus teeth are one of the most common dinosaur fossils available to the market for casual collectors. It is well known among paleontologists that muddy areas preserve fossils the best, as the mud creates a mold as the dinosaur’s bones sink in.

Our ethically sourced fossils come from the Kem Kem beds in Morocco, where our suppliers go out into the desert and collect these artifacts by hand.
