Designed and patented by Christian Sharps in 1848, the Sharps Carbine was superior to most weapons available during the Civil War. The carbine was superior to most guns in various ways. It offered greater accuracy (especially at long distance) than the commonly used muzzle loaded rifles muskets such as the Enfield and the Springfield. Being breech loaded, it allowed for faster reloading times and it was generally produced with a higher quality of manufacturing. Unfortunately, all these qualities came at a cost, manufacturing one of these rifles cost an average of 3 times the cost of producing a normal musket. As a result the carbine was often issued to sharpshooters. The carbine was also particularly popular in the U.S. cavalry given its practicality as a shorter and lighter gun to carry on horseback than the cumbersome and awkwardly long muskets that were issued to the infantry.
